Now & Then: Jackie Kennedy

If Jackie Kennedy were still alive, she'd be wearing Proenza Schouler's Spring 2011 Ready to Wear Collection.

Photobucket
Jackie Kennedy oozed style. After all we have her to thank for bringing over sized sunglasses into our lives- a personal favorite of mine. She is most widely known for her role as First Lady of the United States from 1961-1963. However, besides being First Lady, Jackie Kennedy also had a very successful career as a book editor in the later part of her life and was known for her contributions to the arts and historic preservation. And all of this equals a lot of dressing up and a lot of events to attend for this girl.  I love the modern edge Proenza Schouler has given to the classic two piece suit, incorporating interesting lines and a fresh color pallet. It reminds me of the very best Jackie Kennedy brought to fashion. To see the rest of the "Now and Then Gang" go here and if you have any requests- leave a comment!

Wedding Planning

My friends Jess and Caleb asked me to help plan their wedding back in April, before they were even engaged. Now they are engaged and wedding planning is in full swing. Jess recently spent five months in Sweden and was inspired by the local indigenous Sami people. She'd like to incorporate some of their vibe into the wedding along with nature, simple, delicate details, and an overall feeling of community and celebration.  So here's a peek at the mood board I created for the happy couple and for their big day. It's ever evolving, but I think it's a good start.

It's hard to believe that in a few months it will be a new year all over again. Doesn't 2011 sound so futuristic? In any case I have the perfect spot all picked out for it...

Last weekend I sat next to this group on the beach and was inspired by their entire vibe. I don't know how well you can tell in the picture, but mix and match prints, bold colors and head wraps were what they were selling and man was i buying.

Bedroom Inspiration

I've been staring at this photo for the past week. I think it's the pastel like quality of the colors in the room that I'm so drawn to. Also the fireplace doesn't hurt. Whatever it is- it's my new bedroom inspiration.

Flea Market Finds

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

This past weekend I went to Milnerton Market for the first time in probably four or five months and man was it good to be back. When Andrew and I first moved to Cape Town we had nothing except two suitcases each, full of our clothing and a few personal items. After we moved into our very empty house, Milnerton Market quickly became our favorite spot to find things for our home. We estimate that about 75% of our house is made up of Milnerton goods.  So here's what Sunday at Milnerton looked like...

And here is what came home with me from Milnerton this trip- a few vintage fabrics that I'm going to turn into pillows for our guest bedroom.

Now & Then: Katharine Hepburn

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

If Katharine Hepburn were still alive, she'd be wearing Nanette Lepore's Spring 2011 Collection.

Photobucket

Katharine Hepburn is probably my favorite movie star of her time. Growing up I loved watching her old movies- she exuded such spunk and smarts. Fun fact about Katharine Hepburn: she holds the record for the most best actress nominations at the Academy Awards- winning four Oscars out of twelve nominations. Katharine's signature pieces seemed to be high wasted bottoms and collard blouses. She also consistently wore pants decades before it ever became fashionable for women to do so, much to the annoyance of the movie studios. Nanette Lepore's Spring 2011 Collection suits Katharine well- taking many classic styles common in the 30's and 40's and giving them new life and a modern edge. To see the rest of the "Now and Then" Gang go here and if you have a suggestion about someone you'd like to see featured please leave a comment! Oh, and please look at Miss Hepburn's shoes in the old black and white photo- amazing.

Pictures from the Weekend

This past weekend was pretty gloriously lazy. We didn't do much except lay around the house, play a few games of backgammon, and watch episodes of Glee and Project Runway.  On Sunday morning  we attended a birthday breakfast for my friend Jen at the newly opened Field Office. It was lovely- we had the whole place to ourselves. Waffles, pastries, mimosas and coffee overflowed. Here are some pictures from the party.

Inspired by The City of Lights

Admittedly I'm not a Chanel type of girl, but recently I watched the movie Coco Before Chanel with Audrey Tautou and oh man did I love it. The story of Chanel's life and how she created a fashion dynasty was moving and had me dreaming of ways to get myself to Paris. Ever since my failed attempt in 2008 when I gave up Paris in favor of more time in Amsterdam and more money in my pocket, I've been kicking myself. (note: amsterdam was amazing and i loved my time there- i just wish i had been able to do both!)

Now & Then: Simone de Beauvoir

Thursday, October 7, 2010

If Simone de Beauvoir were still alive, she'd be wearing Rachel Comey's Spring 2011 Collection.

Photobucket
I've been wondering what famous woman in history would wear my favorite designer's clothing...turns out it's French writer, philosopher, and feminist, Simone de Beauvoir. A free thinking lady of her time, Simone came of age in Paris during the 1920's and 30's. Wrapped up in all things academic, social and political, Simone was almost as famous for her personal life as she was for her professional one. Rachel Comey's laid back, city bohemian vibe suits Simone's aesthetic well- keeping things loose and free just like Simone herself. Thanks to Catherine from wolf eyebrows for the suggestion and if you'd like to see the rest of the Now and Then Gang go here.

In Love With Damascene Jewelry

A few weeks back for my birthday, I received the best present from my friend Erin- a damascene pendant. I'm now completely enamored with this beautiful style of jewelry that has its origins in ancient Greece. Damascening is the technique of inlaying different metals into one another. I was so excited when I got it, that my mom ran upstairs and returned with a damascene bracelet and earrings that had belonged to my grandmother- it was like Christmas morning.
